June Newsletter: Sports

With so many headline-grabbing athletes today, it’s difficult to enter the children’s section of a book store and not be dazzled by the number of books. I want to suggest that as you browse through the books, pick one about yesteryear.

Take Jim Thorpe or Jackie Robinson books for example. I loved Brad Melzer’s, I am Jackie Robinson: Ordinary People Change the World. It looks like a book for the tiny ones, but I would share it with first graders and older groups. The comic-like format of this book is refreshing and makes a difficult subject--like racism--understandable. Melzer uses this format in his entire Ordinary People series for young readers. The second Jackie Robinson book I was impressed by was When Jack and Hank Met by Cathy Goldberg Fishman and illustrated by Mark Elliot. This beautiful book tells the parallel stories of two athletes: Jackie Robinson and Hank Greenberg. Although they grow up in worlds filled with racial and religious discrimination, the baseball field brings them together. Their bravery in pursuing their passion despite opposition, opened up the game of baseball and eventually changed the world.

Happy Reading!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“Books are health food for your brain and dessert for your soul. Books are one of the few proven sources of mental exercise known to man. Reading is a workout for your mind. If your body needs thirty minutes of exercise a day, so does your thinker.”

-Pat Williams, former defensive tackle, NFL

GGAB strives to provide high-quality award-winning books to Title 1 demographics.

Dr. De Soto, a mouse dentist, copes with the toothaches of various animals except those with a taste for mice, until the day a fox comes to him in great pain.

In award-winning artist Jerry Pinkney's wordless adaptation of one of Aesop's most beloved fables, an unlikely pair learn that no act of kindness is ever wasted. After a ferocious lion spares a cowering mouse that he'd planned to eat, the mouse later comes to his rescue, freeing him from a poacher's trap. With vivid depictions of the landscape of the African Serengeti and expressively-drawn characters, Pinkney makes this a truly special retelling, and his stunning pictures speak volumes.

Your baby's first word will be . . .

"Dada!"

Right

Everyone knows that fathers wage a secret campaign to ensure that their babies' first word is "Dada!"

But how does it work?

One of the most popular entertainers in the world and NBC's The Tonight Show host, Jimmy Fallon, shows you how.

The Diaper Program received and gifted 150 books along with diapers during their May event! Here are some sweet moments from that day courtesy of Santa Fe Food Depot and their amazing team!

"I can't wait to get home and read this book!" - Lilia, age 6

"We can read that one with grandma!" - girl, about age 7, re. the bilingual book she chose

"I can read in English and Spanish both!" - girl, about age 6, proudly proclaiming her bilingual abilities

Gives food to over 1,300 Native American children from the reservations. GGAB wants to give each child a new quality book! Many of these children do not have the internet at home, leaving them without the opportunity to read online.
