Sofia Ferrer, Linguistics, UNM Reading Tutor
Sofia Ferrer, Linguistics, UNM Reading Tutor

Hello! My name is Sofia Ferrer. I am a first-year student at UNM, majoring in Linguistics and minoring in International Studies. I’ve always had a passion for teaching, and that is what brought me to GGAB as a reading tutor. I’ve always loved to read, and that love was passed down from my mother to me at a young age, so being able to share this love with children that are pre-literacy is truly a gift. Watching the students get excited for me to come to their classes before nap-time and before class gets out for the day is an incredible feeling. Them getting excited for me is them getting excited for reading.

Outside of GGAB, I am a lifeguard over summers and some holiday breaks. I was a full-time lifeguard for three years before I left my state for university here in New Mexico, and I enjoyed it. I made lifelong friends and relationships there, but I needed something new without completely shutting it down, so I began to teach swimming lessons. That’s where I found my love for teaching. Being one-on-one with the kids and watching them progress with practice and explaining in different ways if they just didn’t understand. I loved it all, no matter how frustrating the kids were when they were afraid of the water. Teaching kids how to swim or read are skills that are necessary in their futures, and that’s the impact I want to leave. That these skills are necessary for them to carry with them, and I helped them through every step.

My career goal as of right now is to have a stable job as a foreign service officer in the Middle East, I believe that is where I and my skills are needed most. I am taking Arabic for my language requirement as a Linguistics student, and my thematic concentration for my minor is Conflict, Peace, and Diplomacy. I believe having the right people in the right places will help this world be more peaceful and helpful to the people who need it rather than wartorn and with other priorities. Being a Reading Tutor at GGAB helps with this because I get to use my multi-lingual skills regularly. I read to the kids in English and Spanish, I make reading guides in different languages so all types of parents can participate. I currently focus on English-Spanish translations only, but branching out into Portuguese and Italian will really help. Getting practice translating in real-time will help in my future switching through languages with ease as needed.
