What is the Read-a-Thon?

The Read-a-Thon is a community event focused on encouraging students to read actively and thoughtfully. On this day, students gather to read books provided by generous sponsors and engage in activities that deepen their connection to literature. The event is not just about reading but also about understanding and reflecting on what they read.

This year, La Cueva DECA students played a key role by reading to younger students, creating a supportive and interactive environment. Meanwhile, the Greater Good Action Board (GGAB) generously supplied the books, ensuring every student had access to quality reading material.

How the Event Works

The Read-a-Thon is structured to make reading fun and rewarding. Here’s how it unfolds:

Each student receives a book from GGAB’s collection. The books cover a variety of genres and reading levels to match different interests and abilities. La Cueva DECA students take turns reading aloud to groups of younger students. This peer-to-peer reading helps build confidence and makes the experience more engaging. After reading, every student fills out a book report. This encourages them to think critically about the story, characters, and themes. The reports also help teachers and volunteers understand each student’s reading progress. Completing a book report earns students a reading certificate. This certificate recognizes their effort and accomplishment, motivating them to continue reading beyond the event.
