Hi! I’m Eli, I’m a full time student at the University of New Mexico and a Reading Tutor with Global-Give-A-Book. At UNM I major in history and minor in museum studies. I love learning about history and any one of my family members would tell you I have an interesting affinity for remembering random historical facts and contexts. One of my favorite areas of historical research is art history. I think it's kind of odd and beautiful that human beings can’t seem to stop themselves from making art, which serves little to no purpose to survival, it's just because. Isn’t it kind of cool that we have spent so much of our time on earth just decorating it? With architecture and paint and imagination. I think so.

My love of history has had a big impact on my current career goals, which are broad but still focused. In the end, I hope to be an archivist working in some kind of historic archive; however, I try my best to be fluid in that I am open to many paths and options. I would be happy to work in a museum position or as a librarian, although I would need further qualifications to work in a library. I would also be happy to work as a humanities professor or in another academic position. All I want is the opportunity to work in the historical field, whether that means ending up in an archive or a classroom. History is something I believe I could dedicate my life to happily.

One of the other things I’m passionate about is simply learning as a whole. I think everyone deserves the chance to learn, which is one of the things that drew me to GGAB. If I’m being 100% honest I applied to GGAB because textbooks are expensive, but I was also intrigued by their mission to provide reading materials to those in need. The biggest step to learning anything is learning to read. Reading gets you through more than just school, it is an essential skill for navigating life as a whole. Now that I am a part of GGAB I am happy to be contributing to their mission, and I’ve actually learned a lot of skills that will help me beyond this position.

Some of the skills I have had the chance to further develop in this position are communication, teamwork, time management, and adaptability. Through events like Read-A-Thons, I have had the chance to work alongside other reading tutors as a team. I’ve developed organizational and time management skills by balancing my work responsibilities on top of full-time classes, and I have had to adapt to last-minute changes at events. I have strengthened my verbal communication skills at events and in presentations, and I have strengthened my written communication skills through writing blogs like this one and working alongside GGAB Marketing Director Emily White on creating engaging content for GGAB socials. All of these skills will help me in my future career, no matter what field I choose to go into. Although my major and future career goals may not seem to overlap with the work I'm doing at GGAB, the skills I've developed are wide-ranging and invaluable. I’ve learned more than I could have hoped for, and I’ve had a lot of fun too!
